Free virtual team building games that beat another video call
Updated: 2026-10-20
Most remote teams do not need an expensive event platform. A video call, a shared document and a clear plan for 30 to 60 minutes are enough for a team event people remember.
Every game below is free, runs in the browser or in the call itself and works with 4 to 50 people. For bigger groups, split into breakout rooms of 4 to 6.
The games
- Team quiz in breakout rooms: five short rounds, teams discuss in their room and post one answer in the chat. 30 to 45 minutes.
- Online drawing and guessing: a free browser game with a private room and your own word list, for example product names. 20 minutes, up to 12 per room.
- Zoom in: show an extreme close-up of an office object and zoom out step by step. Fewer steps, more points. 10 minutes.
- Desk scavenger hunt: the host calls out ‘something blue’ or ‘the oldest thing on your desk’, the first to show it in the camera scores. 10 minutes.
- Photo challenge: teams get 10 photo tasks and 20 minutes, the photos go into a shared album and the host shows the best ones.
- Two truths and a lie: in groups of 5 to 8, each person shares three facts, the others guess the invented one. 15 minutes.
- Guess the desk: everyone sends a photo of their desk the day before, the group guesses whose desk it is. 15 minutes.
- Story chain: each person adds one sentence to a story, the last person has to end it. 10 minutes, up to 10 people.
- Closest wins: estimation questions such as ‘How many emails did our team send last month?’. The closest guess scores. 10 minutes.
- Thank-you round: everyone writes two specific sentences of thanks to one colleague in a shared document. Read them out at the end. 15 minutes.
A 60-minute plan
- 5 min: one-word check-in in the chat.
- 30 min: team quiz in breakout rooms.
- 15 min: zoom in or desk scavenger hunt with everyone.
- 10 min: thank-you round, then end on time.
Host tips
- Keep cameras optional. People join more freely when they can choose.
- Use breakout rooms of 4 to 6 for everything that needs talking.
- Send the plan and all links one day before.
- Plan 45 to 60 minutes in total, with a short break if it runs longer.
