Christmas party host script: sample lines from welcome to goodbye
Updated: 2026-10-20
Most people who host the office Christmas party were not asked because they love a microphone. They were asked because someone had to. The good news: reading from a page does not look unprofessional, it looks prepared. You only need the right lines at the right moment.
Below are sample lines from the host script in our kit, a run sheet for about 100 minutes of programme after dinner, and short answers for the moments that go wrong. Replace the parts in square brackets and you are ready.
Run sheet for 100 minutes
0:00 Welcome (3 min): music off, stand at the front, title on screen.
0:03 Form teams (7 min): teams of 3 to 6, mixed, team names on a card.
0:10 Rules (3 min), then rounds 1 and 2 of the quiz with a score update (22 min).
0:35 Company round (12 min): the round about your own team.
0:47 Break (15 min) with a quiet game on the side.
1:03 Two more rounds and a closest-wins final (30 min).
Welcome: "Hi everyone, great to see you all. I am [name] and I will be your host for tonight's quiz show. First the important part: nobody has to answer alone in front of everyone. You play as a team, and if you would rather watch and cheer, you are just as much part of it."
Form teams: "Please make teams of three to six people. Mix it up a bit, not just your own desk. You have two minutes to find a team name. The worse the pun, the better."
Rules: "I read every question out loud, and it is also on the screen. You have [45] seconds, the timer runs along. One point for every correct answer. And the only real rule tonight: phones stay in your pocket."
Before the company round: "Now comes the round where no encyclopedia can help you. Every question is about us. Don't worry: everyone who appears in a question said yes beforehand."
Break: "Half time! You have [15] minutes. Grab a drink. I will give you a shout before we carry on."
Awards: "In third place: [team]! Second place: [team]! And the winners of our quiz show are: [team]! There is a certificate and glory until the next party."
Close: "Thanks for playing and a big thank you to [organisers]. Next up: [gift exchange, food, music]. Enjoy the rest of the evening!"
Plan B for the usual problems
Silence after a question: ask it again in other words, then give a hint such as "It is not A and not D." Never put a single person on the spot.
Energy drops: fewer seconds per question and show the answer straight away. Move the company round forward, it nearly always wins the room back.
Dispute about an answer: you decide, and when in doubt both teams get the point.
Running late: shorten the break first, then drop a round. Keep the company round and the final.
Laptop fails: open the PowerPoint backup from a USB stick, or read from the printed booklet and keep score on a flipchart.
The games
1. Year-in-review awards
Collect nominations beforehand in light categories (“best rescue of a deadline”, “most helpful in the team chat”). Only positive categories: nobody should be roasted against their will.
Players: 5 to 100
Time: 15 to 25 min
Materials: Nomination form, small prizes or printed certificates
Host tips
Print the lines in a large font and hold the page. Nobody minds, and you will not lose your place.
Pick a score helper before the party. They collect the answers and type the points, so you can keep talking.
Say the end time at the start. People relax when they know the programme takes 100 minutes and not the whole night.
What should the host say at the start of a Christmas party?
Keep it under a minute: who you are, that nobody has to perform alone, what happens tonight and that there is a prize. The welcome line above does exactly that.
How long should the programme at a Christmas party be?
About 90 to 100 minutes of programme after dinner works for most teams, with a break in the middle. After that people want to talk and dance.
Is there a complete host script to download?
The Complete kit includes a host script booklet with every line, the run sheet, a plan B, tips for quiet teams and a cheat sheet, together with the quiz show and printables.
